Google’s homepage “Doodle” celebrates the 125th anniversary of the largest recorded snowflake — a stone-cold behemoth said to be 15 inches in diameter.  The freakishly massive flake reportedly drifted or perhaps plummeted to earth at Montana’s Fort Keogh in 1887.

In Google’s stylish new animation, a gargantuan flake falls from the sky over several seconds, settling next to a cow and sending a couple of birds flitting away. (The snowflake also becomes the middle “O” in Google, with a shadowed tower representing the “L” and a leafless tree sitting in for the ”G.)

Organisers are looking for 60 people to take part in the event which starts on July 12.

Robbie McIntosh, the charity’s events manager for Scotland, said:

“The Edinburgh to Dublin cycle challenge is set to be an unforgettable experience for all involved. The 220-mile route takes in some of Scotland and Ireland’s most beautiful roads and countryside while raising funds to enable Marie Curie to continue its invaluable work throughout the year.”

Those wanting to take part will have to pay a registration fee of £150 and pledge to raise a minimum of £1,250 in sponsorship.

Costs cover accommodation, meals, the ferry crossing and return flight to Edinburgh, plus a support team including a bike mechanic who will be on hand throughout the trip.

Marie Curie Cancer Care employs more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, providing care to more than 31,000 terminally ill patients.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the new-look Timeline profile last year but says:

”From now, users will simply be notified that they are being ‘updated’ via an announcement at the top of their home page Over the next few weeks, everyone will get timeline. When you get timeline, you’ll have 7 days to preview what’s there now.  This gives you a chance to add or hide whatever you want before anyone else sees it.

Once timeline is activated on your profile, you have seven days to ‘clean up’ – and you will probably want to. Things from your past that may have been previously hidden deep within your photos or timeline can be much more visible.

If there is anything particularly you don’t want shown, such as your relationship status from five years ago – which will be public by default – you’re best to click on the right hand side to the year it occurred, such as 2006, find the post and choose to either delete or hide it.

It all has to be done manually.

You can now choose directly from the right-hand side of nearly every section on profile who sees what for individual sections (such as photos, posts, likes etc). When you click on the item, you can choose whether it is seen publicly, by friends or by a customised list.

If you enable any timeline apps, be sure to read their privacy policies thoroughly – many will not ask again before posting information to your profile. Spotify, for instance, will default to filling your timeline with what you listen to, unless you tell it not to.

Facebook now has the ‘View profile as’ feature on the main page, rather than in privacy settings. This lets you check how different people can see your profile so you can then customize it as you wish.

Celebrated annually on 26 January, the date commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of New Holland.

Although it was not known as Australia Day until over a century later, records of celebrations on 26 January date back to 1808, with the first official celebration of the formation of New South Wales held in 1818.  It is presently an official public holiday in every state and territory of Australia and is marked by the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards on Australia Day Eve, announcement of the Honours List for the Order of Australia and addresses from the Governor-General and Prime Minister.  With community festivals, concerts and citizenship ceremonies the day is celebrated in large and small communities and cities around the nation. Australia Day has become the biggest annual civic event in Australia.

The date is controversial to some Australians, particularly those of Indigenous heritage, leading to the use of alternate names, such as Invasion Day and Survival Day. Proposals have been made to change the date of Australia Day, but these have failed to gain widespread public support.
