Morrisons Replaces Netto In Tamworth

Opposite Tamworth Collage once stood a red and white Kwik Save, with red uniforms smiles and busy shoppers which was replaced by yellow and black Netto with its popular continental foods and very low affordable prices. In January it was rumoured Netto was also to leave to be replaced by Morrison’s.

Seems rumors were correct. Morrisons already has a huge superstore just outside Tamworth town centre in Wilnecote so it’s a welcome sight to those who don’t drive to have a supermarket located next to BP Petrol Garage and not joined Asda and Sainsburys at Ventura Park, as Morrisons opened its doors to the public Monday 30th May 2011.

Morrisons has now announced that it is to pay Asda £28.1 million for 16 ex-Netto stores, which will add 120,000 sq ft of retail space to the company’s property portfolio. Staff already employed at the Netto stores will transfer to Morrisons under TUPE regulations.  A statement released by Morrisons indicated that obtaining the stores is conditional upon the successful completion of Asda’s takeover of Netto UK and final approval by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

In September the OFT cleared Asda’s acquisition of Netto’s 195 UK stores, but called on the Walmart-owned company to sell 47 outlets due to competition reasons.
